Intent
At Cardinham Primary School, we believe that music is a powerful form of expression that enriches children's lives and supports their personal, social and creative development. Through listening, singing, performing, evaluating, analysing and composing, children develop a deep understanding and appreciation of music from a wide range of cultures, traditions and historical periods.

Our curriculum encourages pupils to appreciate the diversity of musical styles and traditions while developing respect for the role music plays in people's lives and communities. Implementation
Our music curriculum is designed to ensure that all children actively engage in listening, singing, playing, performing, composing and evaluating music. These skills are developed through high-quality classroom lessons, weekly singing assemblies, performances, school productions and opportunities to learn and play instruments.
Children are taught the key elements of music, enabling them to develop a secure understanding of musical vocabulary and concepts. They learn to recognise, analyse and discuss how music is created, structured and performed. Through practical experiences, pupils explore rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics and texture while developing their confidence as musicians.
Children learn to play a range of percussion instruments and are introduced to basic musical notation, helping them to understand how music can be represented and communicated. Composition is a central part of the curriculum, allowing pupils to experiment with musical ideas, improvise and create their own pieces using instruments, body percussion and vocal sounds. These experiences deepen their understanding of musical elements and support their development as confident performers, composers and listeners.
Music is taught progressively across the school, building on prior knowledge and skills so that children develop both technical ability and musical understanding throughout their primary years.
Impact
By the time they leave Cardinham Primary School, children will have developed a lifelong appreciation of music and an understanding of its cultural, historical and social significance. They will be confident in expressing themselves through music, whether as performers, composers, listeners or audience members.
Children will be able to discuss and evaluate music using appropriate musical vocabulary, recognise the key elements of music and understand how these contribute to a performance or composition. They will have developed confidence in singing, performing and creating music, as well as the ability to work collaboratively, persevere and share their ideas respectfully.
At Cardinham Primary School, children benefit from a range of musical opportunities beyond the National Curriculum. These include performances, visiting musicians, concerts, school productions and opportunities to celebrate musical achievements within the school community. We are proud to offer Rocksteady Music School, which gives children the opportunity to sign up for weekly band lessons and learn to play an instrument as part of a real band. Through Rocksteady, pupils develop instrumental and performance skills, teamwork, resilience and confidence while performing to audiences of peers, staff and families.
We value and encourage individual musical interests and talents, ensuring that all children are inspired, challenged and supported regardless of their previous musical experience.
