Intent
At Cardinham, it is our intent that all children will be ‘lifelong learners’ with the confidence and ability to develop their skills and understanding when having new experiences, meeting new challenges and finding themselves in unfamiliar situations. We share a cohesive vision to help children to understand and value how they and others fit into and contribute to the world. We have a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health through the delivery of a programme of engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole school approach. Our approach aims to develop the qualities and attributes children need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society and the global community.
Implementation
PSHE at Cardinham is implemented using the Lifewise programme which is a whole school approach. We timetable our PSHE lessons so that pupils are within individual year groups to ensure age appropriate content is delivered. Children are taught one main focus each week during their lesson time although teachers may decide to refresh and recap certain lessons depending on subjects that have arisen in class. The curriculum provides pupils with the opportunities to obtain accurate and relevant knowledge, create personal understanding, explore and challenge a range of values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities and provide them with a range of skills and strategies to live a healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced life. Our PSHE programme deals with the diverse beliefs, values and attitudes that individuals and societies hold. It helps pupils to develop themselves, their understanding of the world, and their ability to communicate their feelings. Children at Cardinham also acquire an understanding and experiences of British values that are necessary if they are to make sense of their experiences, value themselves, respect others, appreciate differences and feel confident and informed as a British citizen. We also take time to tailor our long term plan each year to ensure the needs within a specific cohort are prioritised. For example, in Year 1 the children learn about Road Safety as a priority as they are required to move between our school sites. In addition, our long term plans can be flexible should a particular matter arise during a school year.

RSE
The intent of our Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is to give students the information they need to help them develop healthy, nurturing relationships of all kinds. RSE enables them to know what a healthy relationship looks like and what makes a good friend, a good colleague and a successful committed relationship.
RSE includes what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour in relationships to help students to understand the positive effects that good relationships can have on their mental wellbeing, identify when relationships are not right and understand how such situations can be managed.
RSE supports students in developing resilience, to know how and when to ask for help, and where to access support.
We understand that as children grow older they will be faced with many varied situations within their social groups. We want our children to have the necessary, age appropriate, information to make sensible and informed decisions so that they are safe. In today’s world the use of the internet plays a crucial role, and we want our children to understand how do this safely and with an understanding of the risks.
