CARDINHAM SCHOOL AND NURSERY

Where potential is nurtured and futures are inspired

Education that goes beyond the curriculum

Computing

Computing at Cardinham

Intent

At Cardinham School, we believe that technology is an essential part of modern life and that all children should develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to use it effectively. Our Computing curriculum aims to inspire pupils to become creative thinkers, problem-solvers and responsible digital citizens. We want children to develop a curiosity about technology, understand how digital systems work and gain the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world. Through engaging and purposeful learning experiences, pupils learn to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly while recognising its many opportunities and challenges.

Implementation

At Cardinham School, Computing is taught through a progressive curriculum that covers the three core strands of the National Curriculum:

  • Computer Science
  • Information Technology
  • Digital Literacy

These strands are taught through five key areas:

  • Computer Systems and Networks
  • Programming
  • Creating Media
  • Data Handling
  • Online Safety

Children revisit these areas throughout their primary education, enabling them to build upon prior knowledge and develop increasingly sophisticated skills. Lessons include a combination of practical, hands-on activities, collaborative learning, independent tasks and opportunities to investigate and experiment with technology. This approach helps pupils become confident users of a range of digital tools and applications.

Online safety is a key element of our curriculum and is woven throughout all areas of learning. Pupils are taught how to stay safe online, communicate responsibly, evaluate digital content critically and understand the importance of maintaining a healthy balance when using technology. Where appropriate, Computing is linked with other curriculum subjects to provide meaningful opportunities for children to apply their digital skills across the wider curriculum.

Impact

The impact of our Computing curriculum is that children leave Cardinham School as confident, capable and responsible users of technology. They demonstrate clear progression in computer science, information technology and digital literacy, and are equipped with the skills required for the next stage of their education. Pupils understand how to use technology creatively and purposefully, work collaboratively, solve problems and make informed decisions online. They recognise the importance of online safety and digital wellbeing and are prepared to participate positively and successfully in an ever-changing digital world
